Resources

My bookshelves are jam-packed with books that have helped in some way to change my perspective. Some have even been the firestarter to changing my life. While many served me at a particular time in my life, there are a handful that I still check back with (it shows me how far I’ve come), and recommend to clients. Below is my short list of books that I believe almost anyone can benefit from. If you haven’t delved deep into the literary world of personal development, these are all an excellent place to start.

An Important Note About Books
Because we read with our intellect, the information has a tendency to stay there, so sometimes we end up frustrated because we’re not seeing results. While reading, we’re inspired, but we tend to quickly and easily fall back into old behaviors.

To combat this, it’s important to bring the emotional side into what you’re reading. How do you do that? Well, I’ve outlined 10 Steps to Turn Your Books Into Action. It’ll help bridge the gap between the intellect and emotion so it sinks in on a deeper level. I even created a short form of the 10 steps on a bookmark that you can print and use with these books as a daily reminder. It’s a process and it takes time, but this will help you turn an intellectual pursuit into real, actionable change.

Books I Recommend

The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom
By Don Miguel Ruiz
I first read this book in 1999 and was blown away by the concepts. I remember having a ton of anxiety around trying to switch my focus from other people back to myself so I didn’t make my life about THEM, and these words really helped. It’s a great starter book for not taking people personally, how assumptions are about other people (not yourself) and the self-limiting beliefs that hold you back.

Good for: anxiety, getting unstuck, finding happiness

Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life
By Byron Katie
We all have choices and can decide to do something different; doing nothing is actually a choice. Byron shares her transformation after a long struggle with depression, from which she developed four questions that can be applied to any situation. These questions will enable you to see the problem in a totally different light by accessing your emotions instead of your intellect.

Good for: acceptance, difficult decisions, anxiety, connecting emotionally

Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha
By Tara Brach
This book really mirrors the ways I perceive reality around what we create. I love the part when Tara invites fear to sit next to her on a park bench. Instead of trashing fear or avoiding it, she welcomes it. Fear shouldn’t be in the driver’s seat, but it’s important to pay attention to what it’s telling us. Comparing ourselves to others is something else she covers, and the importance of connecting with who we really are.

Good for: overcoming fear, acceptance, value/self-worth, authenticity

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself
By Michael A. Singer
A great book for understanding the difference between who you truly are and who you believe yourself to be. It is all about developing awareness and taking it to the next level of understanding, as well as shifting your perception.

Good for:  authenticity, connecting emotionally, limiting beliefs

The Surrender Experiment: My Journey Into Life’s Perfection
By Michael A. Singer
Best-selling author of The Untethered Soul (also on this list), this is a testament to what can happen when you surrender fully to life and where it leads you. Michael started this “experiment” after an awakening in his 20s, letting go and saying yes to opportunities even when they weren’t what he wanted. We are our own worst enemy, standing in the way of our own happiness. Witnessing miracle after miracle unfold in this book will inspire you to surrender to the flow of life. It’s truly magic.

Good for: letting go of control, finding happiness, trusting yourself, faith

Write It Down, Make It Happen: Knowing What You Want And Getting It
By Henriette Anne Klauser
If you like to write and manifest what you want, get ready for some really cool things to start showing up in your life. It’s for people looking to get clear on exactly what they want… from the heart (forget the head). I also love the success stories she shares. Get your pen ready and open the door to abundance!

Good for: overcoming fear, getting unstuck, goal-setting, abundance

Teachings On Love
By Thich Nhat Hanh
This book discusses what real love is, rather than our idea of what we think it should be. It addresses the difficulties of relationships and love, but with a different more compassionate perspective.

Good for: love, authenticity, connecting emotionally, strengthening relationships

The Magic of Believing
By Claude M. Bristol
This book was written decades ago about the magic of believing. It includes great stories, really showing the power of our minds and what they are capable of if we focus. Unleash the power of your mind to get what you want in life, work, relationships and more.

Good for: goal-setting, getting unstuck, manifesting

The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn
By Florence Scovel Shinn
Four collected works from one of the 20th century’s most inspirational authors, including The Game of Life. Shinn was a metaphysician who really believed in what she taught, namely achieving success and creating our own reality. I love her playful way of manifesting and I have incorporated much of what she taught into my own practices.

Good for: goal-setting, getting unstuck, manifesting
